    This course will provide delegates in a Project / Site Management role with essential knowledge and understanding on responsibilities and accountability for site safety.

    Day Release Training

    This Day Release option for the market-leading SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) course has been created to allow delegates to attend who may not able to take 5 consecutive days out of their busy schedule.

    The course will run 1 day per week over 5 weeks, following the same curriculum as the block SMSTS course and the same standard of training will be delivered, meeting all Scheme Rules.

    Please Note: The minimum age of attendance for this course is 16 years old, however delegates who are under the age of 18 must bring a completed parental consent form to the first day of the training course.

    Virtual Classrooms

    Virtual Classroom training has been created to allow delegates to gain and develop the required knowledge outside of the classroom - connecting live with a HSS Trainer through a webcam.

    Project managers, site managers and supervisors as well as proprietors of small to medium sized companies.

    Possession of this qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site manager.

    Assessment

    The examination paper consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course. Each exam paper has:

    • 18 multiple choice questions (each worth one mark)
    • 7 questions in multi-response or short written answer format (each worth two marks) The exam pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32).


    The exam lasts for 35 minutes and delegates are permitted to use the provided CITB publications for the last 15 minutes of the exam. Certification Delegates successfully completing the course will receive a CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate valid for five years.

    Please note, CITB no longer produce physical certificates, all certificates are produced digitally and sent to the booker of the course within 28 working days of the end of the course.

    It covers CDM regulations, risk assessments, method statements, site set-up, leadership in safety, accident reporting and environmental management.

    Who Should Attend

    This course is ideal for site managers, project managers, or those about to acquire the responsibility for planning, monitoring, and managing safety on construction sites.

    Q6. Do I need any previous qualifications?
    There are no formal entry requirements. Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, a site manager role. Previous health and safety knowledge is recommended and those without previous health and safety management experience are advised to complete the two-day Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course. Delegates must also be competent in written and spoken English.

    How the Training Works 

    Q7. Can I take the SMSTS Day Release course in a different format? 
    Yes, you can take this course in person or remotely with training delivered by a CITB-approved HSS trainer. You can visit the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) Day Release - Remote Learning course page.

    Q8. What do I need to bring with me? 
    Please bring photo ID, your National Insurance number and your own lunch as this is not provided. Complimentary tea and coffee are available and your trainer can suggest nearby dining options if needed.

    If you’re under 18, you’ll need to complete the CITB Parental Consent Form. If you don’t have accepted photo ID from this list, you’ll need to complete an ID Waiver form. All course materials are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own notebook and pen. 

    Although there is no practical element to this course, some of our training centres are operational sites, the following PPE is required to maintain safety on site and access your training room: Safety boots, hard hat, hi-vis vest or jacket, eye protection, protective gloves, long sleeve top, trousers - shorts are not permitted. If you're unsure whether your training venue requires PPE or you need help with sourcing items, please contact our team on 0345 605 0006.
