    To provide delegates with the knowledge to assess and determine when it's appropriate to use stepladders and step stools, correctly locate and safely use stepladders and step stools and visually inspect for damage before and after use.

    Ladder Association courses are recognised by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as the leading safety training when working with Ladders. For further information please download ‘LA455 Safe Use of Ladders and Stepladders – a brief guide’ which is the new guidance jointly produced by the Ladder Association and the HSE.

    The Ladder Association is the UK's leading authority for ladder safety. It sets national standards, provides expert guidance and promotes safe use of stepladders and step stools. Training aims to help prevent workplace injuries associated with improper ladder use.

    Yes, this course follows The Ladder Association's official guidance and best practice. It's delivered by HSS Training, a Ladder Association approved training provider.

    Q3. What does the Stepladder and Step Stools course cover?
    This course covers safe use of stepladders and step stools, pre-use checks, hazard awareness, safe carrying, setup and maintenance.

    Q5. Who is this course suitable for? 
    Operatives and supervisors who use stepladders and step stools in environments such as shops, offices, schools, libraries and the healthcare sector.

    Q6. Are there any entry requirements?
    No formal qualifications or experience are needed, but delegates must have a good understanding of written and spoken English to complete the theory assessment. For additional support, please refer to Q13. Delegates should be at least 16 years old, in good health, physically fit and capable of lifting, carrying, and maneuvering stepladders and step stools.

    How the Training Works 

    Q7. How is the training delivered? 
    This is a classroom-based practical course led by a qualified Ladder Association HSS Trainer. It combines presentations, demonstrations and hands-on exercises aimed at helping delegates safely use stepladders and step stools.

    Q8. What should I bring on the day? 
    PPE: Please bring safety boots, hi-vis vest/jacket, hard-hat (preferably with a chin strap), protective gloves, eye protection, safety footwear, long-sleeve top and trousers (shorts are not permitted). Please also bring your own lunch as this is not provided. Complimentary tea and coffee are available and your trainer can suggest nearby dining options if needed. All course materials are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own notebook and pen to complete written activities. If you need help sourcing PPE, please call 0345 605 0006 or email training@hss.com.

    Most of our training venues offer free on-site parking, although spaces may be limited. You’ll receive full parking details, including What3Words navigation, in your joining instructions once your booking is confirmed.     Assessments & Certification 

    Q10. How is the course assessed? 
    Assessment includes a short multiple-choice theory exam and a practical assessment covering Stepladders and Step Stools fault finding, pre-use checks and using a Stepladder and Step Stool.

    Q11. What do the 'Level' and 'Category' mean on my LadderCard?
    Every LadderCard shows the level you're trained to use:
    • U = User: trained to safely use ladders and stepladders
    • INSP = Inspector: trained to inspect ladders and stepladders
    • INST = Instructor: trained to deliver Ladder Association courses

    The category shows which courses you've completed, e.g Ladders & Stepladders or Steps & Step Stools, so employers know exactly what certification you have achieved.

    Q12. What certification will I receive? 
    Successful delegates will receive an official Ladder Association LadderCard and Certificate, valid for 5 years, recognised across the UK as proof of ladder compliance.
